Job Details

Our staffing agency is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller for one of our clients in Hot Springs, AR. The Controller will be responsible for directing and managing the fiscal operations of the organization in accordance with Statutory Accounting Principles and financial management practices common within the insurance industry.
The Controller plays a critical role in overseeing the company’s accounting systems, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records while developing policies and procedures that support efficient financial operations. The Controller will also work closely with senior leadership, auditors, regulators, and actuaries to ensure all financial activities meet professional accounting standards and statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee all financial and accounting functions including general accounting, investment accounting, premium accounting, commission accounting, tax accounting, and annual statement reporting.
  • Develop and implement systems, policies, and procedures for financial operations in compliance with regulatory guidelines and accounting standards.
  • Manage and supervise Finance Department staff, including selecting, training, evaluating, and providing performance feedback to team members.
  • Monitor and audit financial work performed by the Finance Department to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee the preparation of journal entries, general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers, and financial statements.
  • Prepare statutory financial reports and ensure timely completion of quarterly and year-end filings.
  • Oversee preparation and submission of tax forms, payments, and related financial documentation.
  • Coordinate with state insurance regulators regarding financial filings, examinations, and compliance matters.
  • Work closely with actuaries on life reserve calculations and actuarial reporting.
  • Monitor company bank accounts and reconcile bank statements.
  • Coordinate with external auditors during financial audits and provide necessary documentation.
  • Prepare financial reports and presentations for the board of directors and senior management.
  • Maintain accurate audit trails for all financial operations.
  • Assist with preparation of the company’s Fiscal Operations Policy and Procedure Manual and update it as needed.
  • Stay informed on changes to Statutory Accounting Principles, IRS regulations, and relevant financial reporting standards.
  • Monitor economic and investment trends that may impact company financial strategy.
  • Participate as an active member of the senior management team and perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of accounting practices, financial reporting, and accounting systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of Statutory Accounting Principles and IRS rules applicable to insurance operations.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and actuarial-related skills.
  • Proven leadership abilities with experience supervising and developing finance staff.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, initiative, and discretion when handling financial matters.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive financial information with integrity and professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a high level of professionalism.
  • Proficiency with computers and financial software systems.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Experience in actuarial and financial management within the insurance industry preferred.
  • Experience with Statutory Accounting Principles strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of FIS Insurance Accounting Suite (IAS) is a plus.
