Job Details
Our client is seeking a skilled and dependable Road Technician (Field Service Technician) to provide on-site diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance for forklifts and material handling equipment. The Road Technician (Field Service Technician) will travel to customer locations to troubleshoot equipment issues, complete repairs, and ensure equipment is safe and operating properly.
This position requires strong mechanical and technical skills, independent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and excellent customer service. The Road Technician represents the company directly in the field and plays an important role in maintaining equipment uptime, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel system issues on forklifts and material handling equipment.
- Perform breakdown repairs, corrective maintenance, and emergency service calls at customer locations.
- Complete follow-up repairs identified during preventative maintenance inspections.
- Perform repairs according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.
- Test equipment after repairs to verify proper operation.
- Ensure serviced equipment is restored to a safe and reliable operating condition.
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on customer-owned and rental equipment as assigned.
- Inspect equipment and identify potential problems before they result in breakdowns.
- Document maintenance findings and recommended repairs.
- Maintain accurate service and maintenance records.
- Communicate recommended repairs and equipment concerns to the Service Manager.
Customer Service
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding equipment condition, repairs, and maintenance needs.
- Clearly explain service findings, repair recommendations, and completed work.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude while working at customer locations.
- Address customer questions and concerns appropriately.
- Notify the Service Manager of customer concerns, safety issues, or recurring equipment problems.
Reporting & Documentation
- Complete work orders, service reports, and electronic documentation accurately and promptly.
- Record labor hours, parts used, hour meter readings, and repair details.
- Document safety concerns and urgent repair needs immediately.
- Maintain accurate records for warranty-related repairs.
- Ensure all required service documentation is completed before closing work orders.
Parts, Tools & Service Vehicle
- Identify parts and materials needed to complete field repairs.
- Communicate parts requirements accurately to the Parts Department.
- Maintain an organized inventory of parts, tools, and supplies in the assigned service vehicle.
- Ensure issued parts are properly accounted for and unused parts are returned as required.
- Keep the service vehicle clean, safe, and properly maintained.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
- Comply with OSHA requirements and customer-specific safety regulations.
- Ensure serviced equipment meets applicable safety and operating standards.
- Use proper personal protective equipment and safe work practices.
- Report unsafe working conditions, equipment hazards, or other safety concerns immediately.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and service vehicle.
Service & Operations Coordination
- Communicate regularly with the Service Manager and Service Writer regarding job assignments, scheduling, and repair status.
- Coordinate with the Parts Department to obtain necessary components for repairs.
- Support Rental and Operations teams with field service needs as assigned.
- Assist with equipment inspections for rental equipment and customer fleets.
- Provide updates on completed work, additional repair needs, and equipment condition.
Qualifications
- Previous experience repairing forklifts, heavy equipment, industrial equipment, automotive equipment, or similar machinery preferred.
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems.
- Ability to diagnose equipment problems and determine appropriate repairs.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while effectively communicating with customers and management.
- Professional communication and customer service skills.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer locations.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and other service equipment.
- Ability to work in varying field conditions and environments.
- Ability to lift, carry, bend, kneel, stand, and work in physically demanding positions as required.
Work Environment
The Road Technician (Field Service Technician) will primarily work at customer locations and may be exposed to indoor and outdoor environments, warehouse facilities, loading areas, and industrial work areas. The position may require travel throughout the service area and flexibility to respond to breakdowns or emergency service calls. Candidates should be comfortable working independently in a variety of field conditions while maintaining a professional and safety-focused approach.
